Shea Homes
Roy Humphreys has been an active leader in the home building industry for over 25 years. Joining Shea Homes in 1974, he became President in 1980 and has grown the company from two divisions with a yearly yield of 350 homes annually to six divisions producing over 5,000 homes. Under Roy's accomplished leadership, Shea has built over 36,000 homes and lots delivering product to a full range of customers from first-time buyers to move-up and active adult markets. Shea Homes builds homes and develops master-planned communities in six markets: Southern California, Northern California, San Diego, Arizona, Colorado, and Active Adult communities.
His unique management style combines a hands-on approach with involvement in all aspects of the business and empowering his people by giving them the freedom to pursue projects which best fulfill their market needs and opportunities. He enjoys the challenges associated with conceptualizing a project; the designing stages of the product, and the accomplishment of the first product enhancement of the community. Contributing to Shea Homes' success is the breadth of products they develop and their continued focus on the customer while maintaining diversity and innovation as they plan the future. However, Roy's staff attributes his genuine high regard and respect for his people as the most empowering motivation to achieve.
Six years ago, Roy enthusiastically launched Total Quality Management as the guideline for Shea Homes to conduct its daily business. Together with his divisions, a Vision Statement that pledged Customer Satisfaction, Quality and Service, Teamwork, Tradition and Community was crafted and adopted. Under his leadership, the divisions have made significant strides in incorporating the principles of Total Customer Satisfaction into every facet of their operations. The Arizona Governor's Quality Alliance honored Shea's Phoenix Division with The Pioneer Award for Quality in 1994. The San Diego Division received the 1996 National Housing Quality Award from the National Association of Home Builders / Professional Builder magazine, the California Quality Awards "U.S. Senate Productivity Award in 1996 and 1997, and the Governor's Award in 1998. Each of these awards utilizes the Malcolm Baldridge Award criteria which has become the framework Shea Homes employs to develop their annual Business Plan, goals and gain valuable feedback for improvement opportunities.
Over the years, all of the divisions have been honored by numerous agencies for their outstanding work in the industry. Gold Nuggets, MAME, MIRM, and Elan awards are displayed proudly at each of the divisions. In 1994, Roy was honored by California Builder magazine as Builder of the Year and was inducted into the California Building Industry Hall of Fame in 1995. In 1997, the Orange County Chapter of the Building Industry Association recognized Roy with their Tribute to Excellence Award for his contributions to the industry and his community .
Community involvement is an integral part of Shea's vision. Each division takes an active part in contributing to the communities in which they build. Commitments are built into the divisions' annual Business Plans and the rewards and enthusiasm generated from these endeavors are contagious. Although many activities involve our youth by offering educational opportunities, scholarships and equipment, volunteer efforts also include employees donating time and talents after work.
A strong supporter of industry organizations, Roy has been a member of the Home Builders Council, and has served on the Boards of Directors for the California Building Industry Association, the National Association of Home Builders, the Orange County Building Industry Association, and the Building Industry Association of Southern California. In 1989, Roy served as President of the Building Industry Association of Southern California in the year of their highest membership. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment during his tenure was establishing the Building Industry Show (BIS), which designs and presents innovative educational programming and produces the highest regional exhibit of the latest in products and services for Southern California's building industry professionals.
Roy is a long-standing member of The Executive Committee (T.E.C.), an international program of successful CEO's who share perspectives on common business challenges. He also is affiliated with the Urban Land Institute supporting their mission of providing leadership and research of emerging land use trends.
A Georgia Tech graduate with a degree in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from Wharton, Roy maintains residences in California and Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife, Helen. Roy and Helen have two daughters, Cheryl Lynn and Jennifer; a son, Matthew and one grandchild, Noah.
